A. Donn Olin, 80, lifelong resident of Garrettsville passed away at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna on Saturday, April 9th, 2011. Donn was born on June 1st, 1930, in Cleveland to A.D. and Marjorie (Loomis) Olin.
He attended Garrettsville High School, graduating in 1948, then attended Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio where he earned a degree in pharmacy. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Brokaw on September 14, 1952, after which he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Germany. After his discharge, he went into the drugstore business with Earl E. Pulsue, and then purchased the Pelsue Drug Store from the family after Mr. Pelsue’s death in 1957. Donn worked alone until 1965 when Gary Benes became co-owner. Pelsue’s “claim to fame “was nickel Cokes until 1980 when the price was raised 10 cents. Donn truly cared for “his “customers for over 50 years.
Donn served two terms on the school board from 1966-1974, being president for three years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, obtaining the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Garrettsville United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees over the years. Donn loved gardening, spending many hours starting seeds and tending to his flower beds. Most of all, he was passionate about his family.
Donn is survived by Carol, his wife of 58 years, daughters Kim (Bob) MacDonald of Strongsville, Suzy (David) Lamb of Rocky River, son Dann (Barbara) Olin of North Springfield, PA.; eight grandchildren, Dan (Stephanie) MacDonald, Alison MacDonald, Abby Olin, Maggie Olin, Mandy Olin, Conor Lamb, Owen Lamb, and Kyle Lamb.
Relatives and friends are welcome to visit with the family at 1 P.M. on Saturday, April 16th, 2011, at the Garrettsville United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 2 P.M. Reverend Kris Patt and Reverend Fred Bell will officiate. A Masonic service will precede calling hours at the church, starting at 12: 30 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church’s Organ Fund at 8223 Park Avenue, Garrettsville, OH 44231.
