Anna Winkler, (nee Dax) age 88, of Swampscott, Mass. formerly of Brunswick, passed away due to Covid19 on November 16, 2020. She was born in Vecses Hungary, to Eva and Stefan Dax, the second of four children, and grew up in wartime Europe, surrounded by extended family. Along with many others in her town her family was relocated to Germany where they waited to emigrate to the United States.
Anna spent a few years in Niederaudorf, at a high school for young women who were displaced. She loved her time there and maintained friendships with these women through most of her life. Her family arrived in the US and eventually settled in Cleveland, where she met her husband Anthony. They married and raised three children. She was a wonderful mom. Anna was artistically talented, and had a superb voice that was heard on Hungarian language radio. She performed in operettas (Csardas Kiralyno) and later was an active participant in Saint Emeric church choir.
Anna believed strongly in the value of education, furthering women’s rights and in caring for others. Anna was a truly caring person who impacted many people’s lives. Preserving her Hungarian heritage and passing it to her children was important to her and she involved them in Hungarian school, scouting, and folk dancing.
Over the course of time she took great joy from her three grandchildren. Although she wasn’t able to meet her great granddaughter in person, she took great pride in becoming a great-grandmother and great joy in seeing her on Skype and in videos. Anna loved her extended family.
In the last decade of her life, she experienced a slow but inevitable decline, but did not lose her iron determination to make the best of what the world sent her way. She kept up her good spirits and had a smile ready to her last days.
Anna is predeceased by her parents, Eva and Stefan Dax, her brother Stefan, her sister Eva and her husband Anthony.
She is survived by her children, Steve, Sue Fekete (Val) and Toni Ester; her grandchildren, Eva Sweeney (Mark), Jacqueline La Mouri (Christopher), Peter Fekete; her great-granddaughter, Charlotte La Mouri and her sister, Maria. She will be greatly missed.
