EARL BENDER My friend and lover of 56 years has “kicked the bucket” as he said to me, his wife Hildegarde on August 8, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family. Those who knew him, don’t need a list of things he did, and those who didn’t know him, wouldn’t care. But his children each left a love letter to him: From William: Deaf in one ear so that he might not hear, but he always listened; Blind in one eye, but he saw everything; Crippled in one leg by Polio but he always kept up, with our dreams, pains, troubles and luck. May you find the peace Pop, that you have so dearly earned. From Clifford: I can’t remember the good times, because there were no bad times. Want some juice? Don’t worry about Mom. If I could pick my father again, I’d still choose you. From Jennifer: Dad, having beaten bone disease and Polio was defeated by Lung Cancer. He lives on in his children and grandchildren, all of whom carry on his sharp wit and wicked sense of humor. His zest for life was always present, his patience and laughter constant. He was a steadfast rock in this ever-changing world and the lessons he taught last. “There’s a runny babbit, Dad, and you’d better stop a head.” Love you always. From Amy: Dad—You are amazing. You have overcome so much…Osteomyelitis as a boy…Polio as a young father..and now Cancer.. And through it all, you never ceased to have a smile…and with your smile, you put a smile on everyone else’s face. You have a legacy of 4 children…10 grandchildren, and so far, one great-grandchild. You are the go-to man to get questions answered and jobs done. You are always willing to go on an adventure and you have always demonstrated what love should look like; both for your kids and more importantly , your wife. So thanks Dad, for making math fun…For telling me I can do anything I want to do… Thanks for teaching me that as long as I try my hardest, and give something my best shot, then I shouldn’t be disappointed. Thanks for being the best Dad… My Dad. I love you Pops!
