Catherine Purdy, 91 of Windham, passed away on Thursday morning, May 19, 2011 with her loving family by her side. Born November 24, 1919 in Wayland, Ohio to Christian and Catherine Kainrad, she grew up on the family farm and graduated from Paris Township School in 1937.
Catherine later went on to graduate from Ravenna Business College and on June 21, 1941 she married her high school sweetheart, James Purdy. In addition to raising seven children she worked at the Ravenna Arsenal as a secretary during WWII. In 1952 she and her husband opened and operated the Windham Dairy Queen for several years. Later, Catherine worked alongside her husband as the manager of the Windham Bank for many years before moving to Florida where she worked as a banquet manager at the family owned Holiday Inn.
After her retirement Catherine decided to move back to Windham where she enjoyed working in her flower gardens, playing scrabble and bridge, working cross word puzzles, cooking, baking, and visiting with family and friends. Catherine gave generously her time and service to her community. She was a member of the Dirt Daubers Garden Club for twenty two years, and served on the Windham Board of Education for over twenty years. She was a devout Catholic who regularly attended Mass at St. Michael’s in Windham and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society in addition to many other committees within the church.
She is survived by her seven children, James Purdy Jr. of Nokomis, Florida and Terry (Tina) Purdy of Nokomis, Florida, Lorrie (Joseph) Pinti of Windham, Ruth (Stan) Parrish of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Margaret Jacobson (Jeff) of Windham, Carolyn (Paul) Hostetler of Nokomis, Florida and Lisa Purdy of Howland; 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. In addition she is also survived by her sisters, Caroline Bochert of Tallmadge, Helen Dudak of Ravenna; and her brother, Joseph Kainrad of Wayland, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jim; grandchildren, Todd Purdy, Luke Maher and Sheila Judy; brothers, John, Chris and Tony Kainrad; and sisters, Elizabeth Schimmoeller and Josephine Halay.
Catherine will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends.
Calling hours are 5-8 PM on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM on Monday at St. Michael ‘s Catholic Church in Windham. Burial will follow at Windham Twp. Cemetery.
