Charles M. O’Malley, 77 of Brunswick, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at his home. He was born October 27, 1932 in Cleveland to Thomas and Catherine (nee Killcullen) O’Malley.
Graduated from John Marshall High School where he played football and wrestled. He worked at Republic Steel for 35 years as an electrician. Mr. O’Malley moved to Brunswick in 1958. He became active in many organizations including the Brunswick Democratic Club, the St Ambrose Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. O’Malley was urged to run for political office and served in multiple terms on council and become Mayor in the early 1970’s.
He built the Brunswick Municipal Complex and dedicated it on July 4, 1974. Expanded the Fire and Police Departments and improved roads. Mr. O’Malley retired in the mid 1990’s and enjoyed being know as a “Winter Texan” He belonged to 2 chapters of Good Sam “The Blue Tips” and the “Has Beeners”, where he served for as the State Electrician He was the former Mayor of the City of Brunswick. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, Council # 4847.
Mr. O’Malley is survived by his loving wife, June Marie (nee Coy) O’Malley; children Charles (Hollie) O’Malley, Donald (Rose) Straw, Kathy Straw and Steven A. O’Malley; grandchildren Heather (Steve) Becker, Charles A. O’Malley, Sean A. O’Malley, Patrick A. O’Malley, April (David) Schell and Emily Straw and great grandchild Aiden T. Becker.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Marilyn, his parents Thomas and Catherine, 4 sisters and 1 brother.
Friends may join the family for visitation on Monday, September 13, 2010 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. and 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 1642 Pearl Road (1/2 mile South of Route 303), Brunswick. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church. PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH AT 9:00 A.M. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery Valley City, Ohio.
