Donald Frank McAfee, age 87, of Strongsville, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at home and surrounded by love. He was “Don” to his friends, but “Gramps” to nearly all who knew him. Don married his high school sweetheart, Virginia (“Jeannie”) and settled in Strongsville. They were married for 48 years, raised four kids together, and loved being grandparents.
Don proudly served as a mechanic for the Air Force Reserves for four years. He then accepted an apprenticeship with General Motors and became a machine repairman in the Parma Pressed Metal plant. He proudly retired in 2000 with over 40 years of service. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking in his shop and tinkering around the house, which he referred to as “The Ponderosa”. He loved to feed the wildlife and especially the birds. He enjoyed traveling and for many years, loved driving down to Florida in the winter to stay and visit with John, Marsha and Ben.
Don is survived by daughters Jeannie and Susan (Irwin), son Frank (Athena), daughter-in-law, Marsha; grandchildren John, Rachel, Ben, Makayla, Tyler, Francesca, Claire, Josh, and Andy; great-grandchildren Indigo, Oliver, Evelyn, Logan and Scotland. Don was preceded in death by Virginia (2005) and his son, John (2018).
We will miss Dad’s sense of humor, enthusiasm, and wit. Dad was never afraid to learn something new. He was accepting and kind to everyone, which we will all strive to carry forward in his honor.
