Dr. Robert C. “Bob” Millonig, 90, of Garrettsville, Ohio passed away on November 17, 2012 after a lengthy illness. He was the youngest of eight children of Joseph and Magdalena (Richtig) Millonig. Bob was born on August 16, 1922 in Dayton, Ohio.
He graduated from Stivers High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton, a Masters Degree in Bacteriology from Miami University of Ohio and a Doctor of Science degree in Microbiology from Johns Hopkins University. For over 30 years, he did research in the laboratories of the Squibb Pharmaceutical Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora (Madigan); his sisters Lynn, Rose, Edna (Louis) Karlsberger, Alma (George) Bush; brothers Adolph, Edward (Evelyn) and Arthur (Lillian), and by his nephews, Robert (Lois) Karlsberger and John (Mary) Millionig.
He is survived by his devoted friend, George Gauthier of Garrettsville; his sons, Robert C. Millonig, Jr. (Reyna) of Clarksburg, MD and James H. Millonig of Princeton, NJ; two grandsons Joseph and Andrew Millonig; plus nieces Anne (Nicholas) Sagan, Eleanor (Ronald) Bischof, Loyann (Eric) Adamy, and Carol (Gary) Brinkman; and by nephews Raymond (Karen) Karlsberger, Richard (Mary) Bush, Charles Bush, Arthur (Sue) Millonig and Michael (Ann) Millonig.
After his retirement, Bob settled in Akron where he did community service for the Summit County Health Department, specifically for AIDS Holistic Services. In addition to being a “buddy” for several AIDS victims, for over ten years he ran Violet’s Cupboard, a food pantry for families of AIDS victims. Over the years he received several awards for his volunteer work. When age forced him to relinquish his duties, The Akron City Council, on behalf of the citizens of Akron, proclaimed Sunday, June 6, 2000 as “Bob Millonig Day” in Akron.
A Memorial Mass will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, November 24 at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, 10692 Freedom St., in Garrettsville. The Rev. Leo J. Wehrlin will officiate. Memorial visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday at the church, prior to Mass. Burial will take place at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Violet’s Cupboard, 1815 West Market St., Suite 204, Akron, Ohio 44313. Care for Bob was entrusted to Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231.
