EUGENE "GENE" O'NEIL CALLEN SR.

Eugene “Gene” O’Neil Callen Sr., 85, of Garrettsville, passed away peacefully into eternal rest after a long illness on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at his home with his loving wife at his side.

Gene was born October 2, 1926, in Tarentum, PA, the son of Charles and Orva Callen.

He was a 1944 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School and joined the Merchant Marines in 1945. He served over the years on the U.S.S. Liberty, U.S.S. Will Rogers and U.S.S. Henry Austin in both the Atlantic and Pacific and overseas from 1945-1948. Upon returning from the service, Gene worked tradesmen’s jobs while attending Kent State University. Following his studies at Kent State, Gene went to work for the Chrysler Corp. in 1962 in the Automation Dept. and retired in 1987 after 25 years of service. In his spare time, Gene loved making wood projects for his home, which his wife, Jackie will enjoy and will cherish forever. He loved fishing with friends and taking trips to Canada with them.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Jackie Callen, whom he married on May 21, 1973; sons, Neil (Tess) Callen of Kent and Bob (Kathy) Callen of Aurora; daughter, Lisa (Lenny) Bush of Kent; step-daughter, Kim (Gerald) Cooper of Texas and step-son, Greg (Kimberly) of Washington State; grandchildren, Mike, Cassie, Chelsea, Kelly, Christie, Vanessa and Crystal; great-grandchildren, Steven, Justin, Rose, Kirah, Keanu, Jaxon and Alessandra.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Orva; sisters, Audrey, Betty and Eileen and sons, Steven and John.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at the First Congregational Church in Freedom on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at 11 A.M. Pastor Jim Melick will be officiating. Full military services will follow to honor Gene’s service to his country with Chaplain Howard Furl officiating. Special thanks are extended to his caregivers and Robinson Hospice Care for their compassion and excellent care of Gene. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gene’s name to Robinson Hospice Care, PO Box 1204, Ravenna, Ohio 44266. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231.
