GREGORY LOUIS CRANE

September 27, 1946 — December 29, 2022

Gregory L. Crane, passed away on December 29, 2022, in Cleveland, Ohio. Greg was born in Cleveland on September 27, 1946, and, moved to Brunswick in 1953 when his family purchased Sleepy Hollow Lake Club in Brunswick. Greg worked in the family business until the family sold Sleepy Hollow in 1984. Greg graduated from Benedictine High School in Cleveland. He received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University and his M.S. degree in Public Administration from the University of Akron. During his undergraduate studies at Ohio State, he worked as a Page in the Ohio Senate.

Greg married Linda (Malanowski) in 1967. Greg served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1969 - 1971, as the Adjutant and Foreign Liaison Officer for the U.S. Army Logistics Management Center at Ft. Lee VA. In 1974 Greg was appointed to the position of the Director of Public Service and Public Safety for the City of Brunswick. He was responsible for overseeing the operations of the Divisions of Police, Fire, Streets, Permits and Capital Inspections and Engineering for the City of Brunswick from 1974 – 2002. Upon his retirement with 30 years in government service, he continued to work doing estimating work for a site work contractor and assisting in his sons’ civil engineering business and legal practice.

Greg also was an adjunct professor at the University of Akron, teaching upper-level undergraduate courses in Urban Politics and Policies, and took course work at the College of William and Mary, University of Wisconsin, University of Pennsylvania, and studied Human Behavior and Motivation at the Menninger Leadership Center, Topeka, KS.

Greg also served on the Boards of the Medway Drug Enforcement Agency, Medina County Drug Enforcement Agency, Medina County Solid Waste Committee, Brunswick Commemorative Affairs Committee, Medina County Community Corrections Board, Medina County Emergency Management Executive Board, Citizens Financial Audit Review and Advisory Committee for the City of Brunswick. After retirement he served on the City of Brunswick Citizens’ Financial Audit Review and Advisory Committee and Medina County Transportation Improvement District.

He was also active with St. Ambrose Church Booster Club and Parish School of Religion, Little League Baseball Coach, Project Learn (tutored GED classes), Scout Leader and received, along with his wife Linda, Scout Family of the Year Award. In retirement Greg was a volunteer driver from the Akron/Canton Regional Food Bank to the Saint Ambrose Catholic Works of Mercy and helped distribute food locally. Greg enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, and family gatherings.

Greg is survived by his wife Linda, of 55 years, children Kyle (Joanne), Travis (Ruth), Deena (Dennis); grandchildren, Ryan, Spencer, Benjamin, Dagen, Gavin and Dennison James. He is also survived by his sister Renee Bollam, brothers-in-law Dan Facemire, Dr. Jim Malanowski (Lorene), Corky Kereky and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Ann Crane, sisters Patricia Facemire and Connie Kereky, and granddaughter Colleen Crane.

Please join the family for a visitation for Greg on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services 1642 Pearl Rd. (1/2-mile South of St. Rte 303) Brunswick. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023, from 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM, with a procession to St. Ambrose Catholic Parish for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Valley City.
