Howard Furl Jr., 83 of Windham, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 17, 2014. He was born May 15, 1931 in Orviston, Pennsylvania to William Howard & Ella (Felmlee) Furl Sr. He served his country honorable in the U.S. Army during the Korean Era. Howard retired from Harbison Walker Refractories in Windham, where he was a brick maker/supervisor.
Howard was a very active member of the American Legion Windham Post #0674, serving as chaplain for many years and a member of the honor guard. He was an active member of the Windham Bible Church, the Windham Lions Club and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a coach and umpire for youth baseball for the Portage County Hot Stove League, served on the Windham Board of Education for 16 years, and was a Windham Township Trustee for 10 years. He enjoyed hunting and gardening, especially growing his Ambrosia corn. Howard loved and cherished serving his community and spending time with his beloved family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis “Till” (Schenck) Furl whom he married January 19th, 1951; son, Kenneth (Cynthia) Furl of Warren; daughters, Debbie Pfleiderer of Rootstown and Patty (Lynn) Herdlick of N. Canton; sister, Jane (Phil) Gillispie of Alabama; grandchildren, Jared, Chris, Lisa, Nevan & Ian; great grandchildren, Zoe, Jacob, Aaliyah, Hunter, Ayden and Jocelyn; and sister-in-law, Sandra. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Guy.
Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Thursday, November 20, 2014 and 10-11 AM on Friday at The Windham Bible Church, 9550 Parkman Rd., Windham, OH 44288. Funeral services will be on Friday at the church at 11 AM with Kenneth and Christopher Furl and cousin, Bill Felmlee officiating. Burial will follow at Windham Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Howard’s name to the Windham Bible Church.
