James Sargent of Mantua, was born in Nahma, Michigan on the 6th of December 1933 to Anna Lucille and Thomas Sargent. His hard working farm upbringing and tenacious character made him right at home in the lumber jack camps of northern Michigan during his teenage years. In 1953, James joined the United States Army and by the end of his military career, he had advanced to becoming a diplomatic liaison and met the love of his life, Norma Rae (Bennett). In January 1964, they began what would become 50 years of marriage. Shortly thereafter they were blessed with their daughter Jennifer (Michael) Viggiani and later their son, Steven Sargent. After his army career, James built himself an illustrious reputation in the construction industry for many reasons such as his impeccable work ethic, attention to detail and pension for getting the job done, no matter what; but what may have been his most noteworthy attribute was his work ethic and “take no prisoners attitude.”
In the small amount of time when he wasn’t working, Jim enjoyed traveling and camping. Unfortunately, on August 7, 2014 after battling health issues, James passed peacefully surrounded by family. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind his sister, Victoria Garlatz, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jacie and Bryson Swanda; grandchildren, Michael (Jaime) Viggiani, Rebecca Viggiani (Jackson), Jay, Victoria and Jessica Sargent and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, J. Edward.
No calling hours will be scheduled and a private burial service will follow cremation. Donations in James’s name may be made to Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community, 11543 St. Rt. 700, Hiram, OH 44234 or Hiram Christian Church, 6868 Wakefield Rd. PO Box 937, Hiram, OH 44234.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231.
