John Robert Hollenbach, Sr. passed away at home on October 20, 2015 at the age of 86. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret (Braumbach) Hollenbach.
John is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Jane (Lejsek) Hollenbach. They were married at the Freedom Methodist Church in Freedom, Ohio on December 17, 1955.
John is lovingly remembered by his children, James Ronald (Diane) Hollenbach, John Robert (Annette) Hollenbach, Jr. and Jolene Renee (Dennis) Rose; seven grandchildren, Jeff, Jenny, Jason, Janet, Jessica, Becca and Hayes; four great-grandchildren, Philip, Brian, Ella and Colin.
John was born in Akron, Ohio on September 6, 1929 and grew up on the family farm in Freedom Township. John was the Freedom Township Clerk for eight years. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served in Korea and participated in the Wonsan-Hungnan, Chosin Campaign, Northern Korea, and the capture and securing of Seoul.
John graduated from Hiram College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and was a member of the Alpha Society. He retired from the Ethyl Corporation (Nymold) and Automation Plastics. John was a member of the Garrettsville Masonic Lodge # 246 and the Silvercreek Chapter # 144 Royal Arch Masons. John attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Freedom and Windham Churches.
John enjoyed his family and had a passion for flying, holding a private pilot’s license from 1972 – 2003. He and Mary Jane enjoyed traveling and were able to experience many wonderful excursions around the globe.
Memorial visitation will be held on October 28, 2015 from 5-6:30 PM at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231. A Masonic Service will begin at 6:30 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home with Rev. Fred Bell and Pastor Kathy Thomas officiating.
