John Cornelius White peacefully passed away surrounded by family Monday, March 8, 2021. He was born November 9, 1934 in Cleveland to Mary Catherine (nee Sweeney) and James Thomas White.
He was a 1952 graduate of St. Ignatius High School. He served in the U.S. Army Honor Guard at Fort Knox, Kentucky. John was a meat cutter by trade, working with many local grocery chains. All who met John knew of his dedication to his faith, family, and community. He served on the Brunswick Board of Education, as chaplain of American Legion Post 202, and as a Eucharistic Minister and usher at St. Ambrose Catholic Parish, Brunswick. Later in life, as a devoted member of St Francis Xavier Parish he was active in Men's Renewal and was a former President of their Xavier Seniors Club. John was a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.
John adored the game of baseball and the Cleveland Indians. Other hobbies included golf, writing and spending time with his friends at OOA. An avid reader, his passion for books and reading culminated in his ownership of West Side Books in Lakewood, Ohio.
John was the loving father of Joanne (Rodney) Brown, James (Barbara) White and Linda (David) Hershberger; treasured grandfather of Jessica White (fiancé Jordan), Rebekah (Rastislav) Janis, Maria Czerwieniec, Tyler, Marina and VitaDee Hershberger; Great-grandfather of Juliana, Dane and Nathaniel Janis.
Preceeded in death by his parents, brothers Thomas and James, sister Mary Theresa Porter and former wife Caroline Sue Nelsen; cherished cousin and uncle to many.
The family graciously thanks the nurses and staff of Hospice of the Western Reserve, the clergy and parishioners of St. Francis Xavier Parish, and everyone at Brookdale Camelot Medina.
Using social distancing practices, the family will welcome friends Tuesday, March 16, 2021 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 3477 Medina Rd, Medina. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 noon at St. Xavier Catholic Parish, 606 E. Washington St., Medina. The Mass can be viewed via "St. Francis Xavier Parish Medina, OH" youtube channel if you are unable to join us. Interment will take place at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date.
