Joseph Manno, 88 of Garrettsville, died Monday January 14 at his residence. He was born November 9, 1924 in Grafton, West Virginia to Guiseppi and Filomena (Nardi) Manno.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran who served in the South Pacific during WWII. Joe was a life-long educator at James A. Garfield, Aurora H.S. and Notre Dame Academy, teaching Spanish and Social Studies. Joe was also involved in coaching during his years at Garfield, serving as Head Football Coach for three years in the mid 1950’s; at Aurora he was Head Golf Coach winning a State Championship in 1971 and was later inducted into the Aurora Athletic Hall of Fame. Joe also taught drivers education to hundreds of students young and old. Joe received his Bachelor’s degree at Ohio University and his Master’s degree from Kent State. Joe loved to speak Spanish and fancied himself to be a linguist. Joe loved golfing at Sugarbush Golf Club where he estimated he played over 4,000 rounds. Joe was also well known for his homemade red wine which he and his family began making in 1987. Joe was a member of a local poker club that has been meeting weekly since the 1890’s. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking for his family on Sundays. Joe was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Garrettsville, where he was active for many years. He was instrumental in starting their annual chicken dinners.
Joe leaves behind his loving family including his wife Theresa (Baglione) whom he married 62 years ago; three sons, Dino (Melanie) of Garrettsville, Mark (Kym) of Hiram and Matthew (girlfriend Lynette Tatonetti); two step-grandchildren Michele (Rodney) Tyner and Steve Kerr and one great-grandson, Alex Tyner; brothers Ralph and James.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Maria, Josephine, Virginia, Catherine and Margaret.
Friends may join the family for Visitation on Friday, January 18, 2013, from 5-8 pm at Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St. Garrettsville. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 10692 Freedom St. Garrettsville. (Please meet at the church). Private inurnment to follow, at a later date at Park Cemetery, Garrettsville, Ohio.
