Marcella (nee Miller) Smith, age 90, of Medina, died on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Brookdale North, Medina.
She was born on January 19, 1928 in Ury, West Virginia.
Cleveland Daredevils QB Marcella (Sanborn) Smith was the first true “star” of women’s football. As the quarterback of the Daredevils, the first honest-to-goodness women’s football team in history, (Sanborn) Smith was the first player hyped as a true star in the sport.
Marcella is survived by her loving nieces, Kaye (David) Adkins, Cindy (John) Zdinak and Nisi Pozderac and her late husband Patrick; nephew, James (Lisa) Vernon; and many great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Edsel W. Smith in 2009; parents, James and Myrtle Miller; brothers, Ray, Kirk, Denver, Cecil; sisters, Helen, Nell and Wilma.
Private burial will be held for Marcella in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
Arrangements were entrusted to Carlson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1642 Pearl Road, Brunswick, Ohio.
