Mary Kompa, (nee Dobrovich) age 90, of Brunswick, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Altenheim Skilled Nursing & Rehab, Strongsville.
Mary was born on February 13, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio to Paul and Mary, one of 5 children and the only girl.
Mary drove a school bus for Brunswick Schools for 25 years, retiring from driving bus numbers 20, 44, 3 and 68. First bus driver of the Brunswick City Bus Service.
She was a founding member of St. Ambrose Catholic Parish, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Parish Council, a bingo volunteer and sang in the funeral choir.
Mary was a member of Brunswick Entertainment for many years as actress, singer and comedian. She also volunteered for physical therapy to injured children.
She has always been a barber and seamstress to friends and family, making over 250 quilts, which she gave as gifts. Mary was a champion (in our opinion) pierogi maker, wedding cake baker, carpenter, card player and gardener.
Early in life she was known for her ability to do the flea hop, tap dance and twirl the baton. Mary also worked at Pearlview Nursing Home as a housekeeper and in the laundry.
Mary enjoyed traveling to Yugoslavia, Portugal, and Ireland on religious retreats.
Other organizations she has been involved in include: Medina VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Marriage Encounter, Cub Scout Den Mother, St. Augustine’s Hunger Center.
During Mary’s stay at Shurmer and Altenheim, she participated in the Christmas Choir; won a bronze medal at the senior Olympics; was chosen Mardi Gras queen; and had her "Opening Minds through Art" works displayed in an exhibition and auction.
She was especially known for her wonderful sense of humor and her kind, giving, and generous ways. She has a very strong compassion for all mankind.
She is survived by her loving children, Rosemary (Bruce) Pforsich, Ed Kompa Jr., and Ron (Denise) Kompa; cherished grandchildren, Brian (Susan) Hohla, Shannon (Shane) Simmons, Corrin (Jeremy) Guldemond, Kaylie Kompa, Jason and Ryan Kompa; great grandchildren, Isabel, Jack, Claire, Melanie Hohla, Cameron Simmons, Kennedy, Skylar Guldemond, John, Alexys, Jameson and Aurora Kompa: and dear sister in law, Margie Dobrovich.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband 32 years, Ed Kompa in 1980; loving son, John Kompa in 1989; dear grandson, Scott; brothers, Joseph (Joan) Dobrovich, Stephen (Mary) Dobrovich, Vincent (Caroline) Dobrovich, and Michael Dobrovich.
Family will receive friends for Mary on Friday, December 14, 2018 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 1642 Pearl Road, (1/2 mile south of Route 303) Brunswick, OH 44212. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 8:30 - 9:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 AM. at St. Ambrose Catholic Parish, 929 Pearl Road, Brunswick, Ohio, Fr. Bob Stec will officiate. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memory Gardens, Brunswick.
