Mavis I. Welty, 81, of Sharon Center, Medina, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 20128 at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center. Mavis was born January 20, 1936 in Congress Township, Wayne County, Ohio to Russell and Ruth (Ickes) Keener.
She was one of ten children. She attended Northwestern High School and graduated in 1954 with honors, was salutatorian of her class and also received the Danforth Award for exceptional character and leadership by young people. Next to her picture in the yearbook it said, “Mavis is really full of fun, she gets along with everyone!” She was a leader at school and that quote sums up her personality. At high school she was a cheerleader, sang in the choir, was a member of the girls’ glee club, was a band member, was in the junior and senior play, Prince of Peace, was a May Day Attendant, varsity baseball scorekeeper, and was on the debate team. She went to Kent State University and graduated with a B.S. degree in education and also graduated with honors.(Cum Laude)
On June 22, 1958 she married the love of her life, Chester Welty. They had dated for 6 years before getting married and were husband and wife for the next 59 years. She taught in the Northwestern School District, Phoenix School system, Foxville, Maryland School District and substituted in Northfield, Ohio. Mavis was a wonderful cook! She also may have been the Northeastern Ohio most knowledgeable female sports fan. Not only did she know the coaches and players for baseball and basketball (both pro and college) but also all of the mascots! Mavis was very active at her church. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sharon Center for 41 years. She served on the church council and was the check writer for many years. Her special love was singing in the choir.
Mavis is survived by her husband and children: Katrina (Welty) Ward, Brian Welty, and Mark (Gay) Welty; grandchildren; Andrew and Abby Ward and Evan Welty; siblings; Virginia Brenneman of Wooster, Richard (Kay) Keener of Wooster, Karl (Nancy) Keener of Wooster, Phil (Jean) Keener of West Salem, and Jane Keener of West Salem and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, James & John, and sisters, Carol Buchholz and Marilyn Weygandt.
Friends may join the family for Visitation on Sunday, January 14, 2018 from 2 to 5 PM at Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 3477 Medina Road (corner of Rt. 18 and River Styx Road), Medina, OH 44256. Funeral Service at 10 AM on Monday, January 15, 2018 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6462 Ridge Road, Sharon Center, Ohio 44274 (Please meet at the church). Burial in Apple Creek Cemetery.
