PAUL CHESTER WILLIAMS

January 14, 1926 — January 27, 2011

Paul Chester Williams, 85 of Medina passed away January 25, 2011. He was born January 14, 1926 in Ironton, OH to Elsie Doretta (nee Venz) and Paul Morton Williams.

The family later moved to Columbus, OH where he graduated from North High School. Paul received a Marine Engineering degree from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and a Mechanical Engineering degree from Ohio State University. He initially worked as a Marine Engineering Officer aboard ships designed for both Naval and commercial service during and after WWII.

In 1955 he married Jeanne Ellen (nee Potter) of Lakewood, OH and made their home in Alliance, then moved to Wadsworth and then to Medina with their children. Paul spent 18 years working for Babcock and Wilcox, first in Alliance and then in Barberton beginning as a test engineer, moving to Assistant to the Manager of Engineering, General Production Control Manager and then to Purchasing Manager. In 1972 he became Assistant to the Chairman in Stock Equipment Co. and later Vice President. He was employed there for 15 years, after which he started his own consulting company as Paul Williams and Associates, where for 21 years he did consulting on commercial and Governmental nuclear projects, primarily regarding hazardous and radioactive waste. He was a member of the Ohio Radiological Material Users Group, American Nuclear Society, ANS Speakers Bureau and the Rotary.

He presented many talks to various groups regarding all phases of nuclear power, low level radioactive waste and its disposal. He also served as Technical Program Chairman for the annual Electrical Power Research Institute International Low Level Waste Conference from 1993 to 2006. In 2004 he joined ProtonCare USA as Scientific Advisor. Paul lived by the precept that he wanted to leave the world a better place than when he came into it. To that end he took on many projects for the betterment of the community, the church and the country, including The Medina Drug Abuse Commission, President of a Property Association and worked to establish a Drug Free Workplace Association in Medina as well as helping companies to institute that program wherever he could. He worked to establish a program to teach high school and college science teachers about radiation, its effects, dangers and benefits under the auspices of the American Nuclear Society since that subject was not covered in most schools. He spent many hours educating people and working to establish Proton Beam Cancer Treatment Centers in Northern Ohio. The word that comes to mind most often in describing Paul is Integrity. His family, his friends and the people who knew him could always count on him to help, to guide and to be there when he was needed.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, daughter Amber of Medina, sons; Mark (wife Orly) of Santa Fe, Ross (wife Natasha) of Las Vegas, 2 grandchildren; Taylor and Sydney, and brother; John (wife Mary) of Manassas, VA.
