PHILIP DANIEL MCCOY

Philip Daniel McCoy, 67, of Freedom Township, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010, at Altercare in Brimfield. He was born December 11, 1942, in Ravenna, Ohio to the late James W. and Connegonda (Grudosky) McCoy.

He was a 1960 graduate of James A. Garfield High School, and served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam Era. Philip was employed as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Mantua, OH. He was an instructor in the Rural Mail Carrier Academy in Massillon, OH. He was a past Grand Knight of the Garrettsville Knights of Columbus Council #11801 and a St. Ambrose parishioner. Philip was an airplane enthusiast and he held a pilot’s license. He was a HAM radio operator and a member of “Flyboys,” the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapters # 5 and #117. Philip was a former member of the Ravenna Elks #1076 and the Akron Sports Car Club, and a former trustee of the Portage County Historical Society.

Philip is survived by his wife, Amy G. (Grayson) McCoy to whom he was married for 34 years; son, Samuel (Constance) McCoy; and daughter, Sarah McCoy, all of Freedom Township.

Calling hours are 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, Ohio 44231. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at 10:30 AM at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 10692 Freedom St., Garrettsville, OH 44231, with Fr. Leo Wehrlin officiating. Burial will follow at Drakesburg Cemetery, Freedom Township.

The family suggests contributions in Philip's name be made to the Andy Grayson Memorial Fund, c/o Crestwood Local Schools, 4565 West Prospect St., Mantua, Ohio 44255.
