Richard Byron Milgate, age 89, of Brunswick, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023. He was born on March 28, 1934, to the late Robert and Doris (nee VanDeusen) Milgate in Cleveland.
He was a millwright for LTV Steel and a member of Steelworkers Local # 979, and proudly served in the United States Air Force. Richard was a skilled woodworker, painter, and illustrator and passed down his creative talents to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Richard was also a car enthusiast and loved driving his vintage yellow Ford truck in the Brunswick Old Fashioned Days parade with his grandchildren and their friends waving from the truck bed. He was big Cleveland Browns and Indians fan and a lover of corny jokes and old country songs. He delighted in serenading his family and friends and sharing his humor even when they lovingly rolled their eyes.
Richard was a sensitive and sentimental man, often standing up to give short speeches to express his pride in his loved ones at family events and holiday celebrations. He loved his family deeply, especially his beloved wife of 65 years, Cookie. They were the definition of “opposites attract,” and upon her passing, it was clear that Richard needed his opposing side. He is undoubtedly happy to be with her once again.
Richard will be deeply missed by his children, Kathleen (Moreland), Robert Milgate, and Richard Milgate; grandchildren, Meghan (Adam) Jurica and Hallie (Donny) Marsh; great-grandchildren, Emmett and Otto; brothers-in-law, Marty Baytos and Joe (Sheila) Vidmar; his many nieces and nephews; and furry friend Faith.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Cookie (Josephine); sisters, Roberta Johnson and Jackie (Charles) Fullerton; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Baytos; and furry friend Sugar.
