Heaven was short a master gardener, and it knew just whom to call home this October 2019: Victor Aglinsky. We imagine Victor was greeted with love and hugs by his wife, Jacqueline, who had gone Home eight years earlier, along with a welcoming crowd of family and friends also in Spirit.
Victor’s interests were eclectic, including many areas of science, medicine, history, all things related to home construction and maintenance, horticulture and gardening, current events/news, fishing, and travel. He graduated from Morgantown High School, in West Virginia, where his potential pro basketball career was cut short as a high school senior when the residency requirements were changed right before the play-offs.
Soon after marrying Jackie (nee Plevich), his high school sweetheart, Victor deployed in the army to Korea, right in the middle of the Korean War. He was stationed several miles from the front lines, where he was a sharp shooter, a military photographer, worked on bomb detail, and was a crafty supply sergeant.
Honorably discharged, Jackie encouraged him to follow her path into teaching, where he spent a vibrant career as a popular teacher of industrial arts, electronics, and wood shop to thousands of students in the Berea City School District. He also coached high school football for several seasons.
Once he retired, Jackie and Jeannie encouraged him to sell in the art and craft shows they participated in, and Victor’s specialty was sandblast-etched mirrors and glass.
He also loved to make things grow, and Victor and Jackie’s property sported an arbor of grapes, fruit trees, berries, banana trees that grew bananas, lemon and walnut trees, 15-foot tall bamboo, and a luscious variety of home-grown vegetables.
Victor leaves behind many who loved him, including daughters Jeannie Aglinsky and Sue Aglinsky Schaffer, brother William Aglinsky (West Virginia), sister-in-law Rose Plevich (West Virginia), nieces and nephews, and good friends of many years.
All are welcome to visit, including former students and colleagues, at Carlson Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 1642 Pearl Road, Brunswick, Ohio, 44212 (1/2 mile south of Route 303) on Sunday, October 13, 2019, from 2 to 5 pm. Visitation will also be held one hour before a funeral mass, 9 am to 10 am, on Monday, October 14, at St. Ambrose Catholic Parish, 929 Pearl Road, Brunswick. The mass will begin at 10 am, with interment and military honors to follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens, 2869 Grafton Road, Brunswick (just west of the intersection with W. 130th).
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The brave, critically ill, yet smiling children particularly touched his heart.
Victor’s daughters would like to send a heartfelt thanks to his cardiologists, Touraj Taghizadeh, MD, and Bartolomeo Giannattasio, MD, who helped Victor enjoy life to the fullest. Appreciation is also extended to Jeffrey Harhay, MD, his primary care doctor.
