Virginia Waller Hubbard, 90, a long-time resident of Mantua, died Saturday, October 2, 2010, at her residence, Emeritus of Ravenna. She was born June 17, 1920, in Garrettsville, the daughter of the late Lloyd Alfred and Helen (Stratton) Waller.

Virginia was a 1937 graduate of Garrettsville High School where she was an honor student and Captain of the G.H.S. basketball team. She was on the English scholarship team all four years. Virginia was granted a full scholarship from Dana School of Music, Youngstown, where she was graduated with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance in 1941. That same year she married Frank G. Hubbard of Mantua, who passed away in February of 1991. They had two children, Elsa and David.

As well as teaching privately in her home, in 1958 she began her public teaching career in the Mantua Schools, where she continued for 25 years. Virginia was a caring, compassionate friend to many. Her interests included her music, camping, cooking, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. She was a member of Hilltop First Christian Church, where she played organ for many years and provided music for weddings, funerals, and vacation Bible school.

Surviving Virginia are her children, Elsa (Robert) Paterson of Saint John, New Brunswick, and David (Brenda) Hubbard of Woburn, Massachusetts; brother, Richard Waller of Erie, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Fred McCausland, Graeme McCausland and Amanda Hayden; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 10 AM to 12 PM on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231. Graveside services will follow at 1 PM at Hillside Cemetery in Mantua.

Virginia enjoyed animals and was especially fond of dogs. She and her husband adopted several over the years.

In lieu of flowers, Virginia requested that donations be made to the Portage Animal Protective League, P.O. Box 927, 8122 Infirmary Rd., Ravenna, OH 44266.
