Walter Hay, 89, a long-time resident of Brunswick, passed away Thursday, April 12 at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Medina. Walter was born July 13, 1928 in Tallmadge, OH. He graduated from North High School in Akron and served as an Army mechanic in Korea from 1946-1949. Upon his return, he received a Degree in Law from the University of Akron. On July 4, 1958, he married Twyla Polen, whom he met at a church social.
The couple moved to Brunswick when Walter accepted a position as Solicitor and Prosecutor of Brunswick, which began his career of community service within Medina County. Professionally, he also served as Referee of Medina County Common Pleas Court and Medina Municipal Court, and maintained a private practice in Brunswick.
Walter was a member of Brunswick First Christian Church since 1963. He served on most committees, was a Deacon and Elder, and sang in the choir. He would sometimes provide the sermon when the minister was on vacation.
He was a member of the Brunswick Entertainment Company and wrote script parodies and acted in productions such as The Ballad of No Name City, 1776½ and Spendalot.
Walter was recently recognized for his fifty years of service with the Brunswick Kiwanis Club where he held positions of leadership and attended national and international conventions. He was also involved with Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and hobbies included woodworking, fishing, hunting, reading, and travel on five continents.
Walter is survived by his wife of 59 years, Twyla; three children, Marjorie (Randy) Thompson, Robert Hay and Marsha (Evan) O’Malley; grandchildren, Shannon (Chance) Thompson Teague, Franklin Thompson, Paul Hay and Liam O’Malley.
Walter was preceded in death by his biological parents Ralph and Gladys Rowinsky, and foster parents Dwight and Anna Hay; brothers Eugene and Kenneth Rowinsky.
Family and friends may join the family for visitation April 17 from 5:00PM – 8:00PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 3477 Medina Road, Medina, OH 44256. A funeral service will be held April 18 at 11:30AM at the same location. Interment will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH.
